Sea Moss Handbook: Everything You Need to Know about Sea Moss (Chondrus Crispus)

Sea moss, also known as Irish moss (Chondrus crispus), and in Spanish as musgo marino, is a red algae found in the colder Atlantic Ocean waters, especially along the coasts of Europe and North America. It is a mineral-rich sea vegetable, naturally providing iodine, iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium, and it has been eaten in coastal traditions for generations.

How Sea Moss Went from Crisis Food to Modern-Day Wellness Superfood

Sea moss has been used for centuries, but it started out as far more than a supplement. During the Irish Potato Famine, Chondrus crispus was often the only source of nutrition available, feeding starving populations when food was rare.

Beyond Ireland, marine algae have long been part of traditional diets in coastal cultures around the world. In Japan, sea vegetables are still commonly consumed as part of everyday meals, reflecting a long-standing cultural appreciation for nutrient-dense ocean foods.

Today, sea moss has re-emerged as a modern wellness essential. Its naturally rich mineral profile, including iodine, magnesium, calcium, iron, and potassium, along with soluble fiber and bioactive compounds, makes it an important addition to smoothies, capsules, and whole-food preparations.*

What was once a humble survival food is now valued for its naturally rich mineral profile. Its iodine supports normal thyroid function and healthy skin, and its iron supports red blood cell formation and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue, when consumed as part of a balanced diet.*

Which Type of Sea Moss Do We Use in Our Products?

We use only wildcrafted Chondrus crispus, a type of sea moss that naturally grows in cold North Atlantic waters. This species anchors to ocean rocks and absorbs trace minerals from its marine environment.

We do not use sea moss that is farmed in warm-water regions such as the Caribbean or sea moss that is sourced from China. Those are farmed varieties, grown on ropes in warm, shallow water. Ours grows wild in cold Atlantic water and is harvested by hand, which is what wildcrafted means. We choose wildcrafted Chondrus crispus for its dense natural mineral profile, its traceability, and its long history of traditional use.

Our supplements are made exclusively with wild-harvested Chondrus crispus sea moss, carefully selected for quality, traceability, and consistency.

Our Sea Moss Is Third-Party Tested

Our Sea Moss Is Third-Party Tested

We conduct third-party lab tests for heavy metals, identity, and microbials on all our products to ensure the quality and safety of our sea moss. Testing for trace metals is a critical step, as even small amounts may pose a risk if not properly monitored.

Since trace metals can be found in all foods, including vegetables, we third-party test each batch twice, once upon the raw material arrival, whether it is intended to be sold as raw sea moss or used for encapsulation. For capsules, testing is conducted again by an independent third-party laboratory after encapsulation.

This double-checking process helps verify that our sea moss meets our internal safety and quality standards.

Sea Moss Is Available in Various Forms for Every Need

Sea moss comes in more than one form, and we carry them all: capsules if you want a measured serving with no taste, raw sea moss in gold, purple and red if you like to soak and blend your own gel at home, powder for smoothies and drinks, and sea moss paired with bladderwrack in one capsule, the classic combination. Whichever form fits your routine, it is the same wildcrafted Chondrus crispus.

What Health Benefits Do People Experience from Sea Moss?

What Health Benefits Do People Experience from Sea Moss?

It’s important to note that sea moss has not been extensively studied in large human clinical trials. Because of this, there is no definitive clinical proof that sea moss itself directly produces specific health outcomes.

However, we do know that sea moss is naturally rich in several essential minerals and vitamins that have been thoroughly studied in human nutrition science. So while we’re waiting for the completion of long-term human trials into sea moss specifically, we can focus on the known benefits of the nutrients and minerals it contains, as confirmed by well-established research.

When consumed as part of a balanced diet, there is evidence that the minerals and vitamins present in sea moss may support several health benefits.
