Description & Ingredients

Dried burdock root for tea, cut and sifted, 4 oz. Arctium lappa, known as bardana in Spanish and gobo in Japanese. Grown and harvested in Poland.

How to make burdock root tea

Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to 8 oz of boiling water. Cover and steep 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. Covering matters, because it keeps the aromatic oils in the cup instead of on your ceiling.

What it tastes like

Earthy and lightly sweet, closer to a root vegetable than to a medicinal bitter. People who find dandelion root too sharp usually get on with burdock. It is the traditional partner to dandelion in the old British drink dandelion and burdock.

What burdock root is

A biennial in the daisy family, related to sunflowers and thistles. The root is dug in the first autumn or the second spring. In Japan it is an ordinary vegetable called gobo, sliced thin into braises and stir fries. The hooked burrs on the seed head are what gave a Swiss engineer the idea for Velcro.

Also available in capsules

If you would rather not brew anything, the same root is available as 90 capsules at 450 mg each.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make burdock tea?
1 to 2 teaspoons per 8 oz of boiling water, covered, 5 to 10 minutes, then strain.

Does burdock root tea taste bitter?
Not especially. It is earthy and lightly sweet. Burdock is much milder than dandelion root.

What is the difference between bardana, gobo and burdock?
Nothing. Three names for Arctium lappa. Bardana is Spanish, gobo is Japanese.

Can I cook with it?
This is dried and cut for brewing rather than for the pan. Gobo dishes use the fresh root.

Where is it from?
Poland, and it is printed on the bag.

How should I store it?
Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F.
