Maca root powder, 4 oz. Lepidium meyenii, grown and harvested in Peru, and known as maca en polvo in Spanish. One ingredient, milled fine, nothing added.
How to use maca powder
Stir 1 teaspoon into a smoothie or a juice. For the herbal shot, which is the traditional way, mix 1 teaspoon into 4 fl oz of boiling water, stir well, cover and let it stand 2 to 3 minutes. Stir it again before you drink, because the powder settles. It also goes into oatmeal, coffee, pancake batter and baking, where the malty flavour suits it.
What it tastes like
Nutty and malty, with a faint natural sweetness and an earthy edge underneath. It is stronger on its own than most people expect, which is why the usual advice is to start at 1 teaspoon and blend it into something with fruit, cacao or cinnamon rather than drinking it plain.
What is in the bag
Maca root powder and nothing else. One ingredient, no fillers, no additives, no sweetener and no flow agents. The capsule version uses a vegetable cellulose capsule, so neither format uses gelatine.
What maca is
A root vegetable in the mustard and cabbage family, grown on the high plateau of the Peruvian Andes at around 4,000 metres, where very little else will grow. Peruvians have eaten it as a food for centuries, dried and stored after harvest, then milled or boiled. The root grows in a range of colours, from pale yellow through red and purple to black, and it is usually sold milled to a powder because the dried root is extremely hard.
Powder or capsules
The powder is the cheaper and more flexible of the two, and it lets you use as much or as little as you like, but you do taste it. The 90 capsule version is measured for you at 450 mg a capsule, 1,350 mg in a three capsule serving as printed on its panel, and you taste nothing at all. Same root, same country, two different habits.
How to store it
Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag.
Frequently asked questions
How do you use maca powder?
Stir 1 teaspoon into a smoothie or juice, or make the herbal shot by mixing 1 teaspoon into 4 fl oz of boiling water, covered, for 2 to 3 minutes. It also stirs into oatmeal, coffee and baking. Start at 1 teaspoon, since the flavour is stronger than most people expect.
What does maca powder taste like?
Nutty and malty, with a faint natural sweetness and an earthy finish. It is bold on its own and mellows a lot in a smoothie, especially with banana, cacao or cinnamon.
Does maca powder go bad, and how should I store it?
Kept tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag, it keeps well. What spoils a milled powder is moisture and heat, so keep the bag sealed and out of the steam near a kettle or a hob, and use a dry spoon.
Does maca powder contain gelatin?
No. This bag is one ingredient, maca root powder, nothing added. The word "gelatinized" that you see on some maca powders is confusing but it has nothing to do with gelatine. It refers to a heat process that breaks down the starch in the root. Our capsule version uses a vegetable cellulose capsule, so that is free of gelatine too.
Is it organic, and where does it come from?
It is organic or wildcrafted maca root powder from Peru, and the country of origin is printed on the bag.
Where can I buy maca powder?
Here. Orders leave in 1 to 2 business days, and we ship worldwide with duty pre paid for most countries. If you are stocking up on powders, the moringa leaf powder is the other 4 oz bag people buy alongside it, and the rest of the range is in loose leaf herbs and teas.
Should I get the powder or the capsules?
Take the powder if you want to mix it into food and drinks and pay less per gram. Take the 90 capsules if you would rather not taste it and want the amount measured for you at 450 mg a capsule. Same root, same country of origin.
