Description & Ingredients

A handmade calendula soap bar with wildcrafted Irish sea moss, orange and grapefruit, on a base of olive and coconut oils. 6 oz. In Spanish you will see calendula soap called jabon de calendula. Pure citrus and cedarwood essential oils give it the scent, sea moss gel gives it the slip, and real calendula petals are pressed through the bar. It cleanses, refreshes and leaves skin feeling soft, on the face and the body. Vegan, cruelty free, suitable for all skin types.

Real soap, not detergent, and why that matters

These are genuine handmade soaps, made the traditional way in small batches. Like all true soap, ours is made with sodium hydroxide, lye, which reacts fully with the oils during a curing process of several weeks and leaves no lye in the finished bar. That reaction is what soap is.

Most bars sold as soap in shops are not soap at all. They are synthetic detergent bars, which is why the label often says "beauty bar" or "cleansing bar" rather than soap. We list every ingredient, including the sodium hydroxide used in the process.

What is in it

  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Water
  • Sodium Hydroxide
  • Sea Moss Gel (Chondrus crispus)
  • Orange Oil
  • Grapefruit Oil
  • Litsea Cubeba Fruit Oil
  • Cedarwood Oil
  • Calendula Flower Powder
  • Calendula Flower Petals

Eleven ingredients, the most of any of our four bars. Pure essential oils, no synthetic fragrance, no dyes, no palm oil, no preservatives.

What it smells like

Orange and grapefruit lead, bright and zesty, with litsea cubeba rounding the citrus so it does not go thin. Underneath sits cedarwood, which is the reason this bar does not smell like a cleaning product. The citrus is the first thing you notice and the cedar is what is left after.

Of our four bars this is the uplifting one. The lavender is the calm one and the eucalyptus is the bracing one.

The calendula petals are real

Two forms of calendula go into this bar: the flower milled to a powder, and whole petals. The petals are what you can see suspended through it, and they are the reason no two bars look quite the same. Calendula, sometimes called marigold, has been used in skincare for a very long time and it is the botanical this bar is named for.

How to make a handmade bar last

Real soap has no hardeners in it, so it will soften if it sits in water. Keep it on a draining dish, out of the direct spray, and let it dry between uses. Treated that way a 6 oz bar lasts most people several weeks. Left sitting in a puddle it will not.

Frequently asked questions

Is there lye in the finished soap?
No. Sodium hydroxide is what turns oils into soap, and by the end of curing there is none left unreacted. Every true soap ever made has been made this way. We list it because it is part of the process.

Are those real flower petals in the bar?
Yes. Whole calendula petals, not a printed pattern or a mica swirl. It also means the look varies slightly from bar to bar, which is what handmade actually means.

Will citrus oils make my skin sensitive to sun?
The photosensitivity concern with citrus mainly involves expressed bergamot and lime oils applied and left on the skin. This is a wash off bar with orange and grapefruit, so it is rinsed away rather than worn. As with any new product, if your skin is sensitive it is worth trying a small area first.

Can I use it on my face?
Yes. It is made for the face as well as the body, on all skin types.

Is it vegan?
Yes. No animal ingredients and no animal testing at any stage.

Does it contain palm oil?
No. The base is olive and coconut oil.

¿Qué es el jabon de calendula?
Es un jabon artesanal hecho con petalos de calendula, musgo marino irlandes, y aceites esenciales de naranja, toronja y cedro. Vegano, sin crueldad animal, 6 oz.

What other scents do you make?
Four bars in total. This is the calendula, orange and grapefruit one. There is also lavender, eucalyptus and spearmint, and sarsaparilla and lemongrass. All are on the sea moss soaps page.

Made in small batches. For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes.
