Raw red sea moss, the red variety of Chondrus crispus, better known as Irish sea moss. Each bag holds 4 oz of whole dried sea moss, harvested in Canada.
Why red
Sea moss comes in a range of colours, from pale gold through red to deep purple, and the colour comes from the pigments the plant produces in response to how much light it gets. Red sits in the middle of that range. It is the same species whatever the shade, Chondrus crispus.
Wildcrafted, and what that means here
Our sea moss grows naturally along marine sea beds and is 100 percent wildcrafted and sustainably harvested, not pool grown on ropes. We source from small harvesters working the cold waters of the northern and southern latitudes where the moss actually grows. It is dried for 3 to 7 days to remove moisture, then packed with no preservatives and no additives.
Across our raw sea moss range we buy from Maine, Canada, Ireland, Northern France and Chile depending on the season. This bag is from Canada.
Where the name comes from
Irish moss got its name during the Irish famine of the 1840s, when people along the coast ate it because there was little else. It has been gathered and eaten by coastal communities for centuries, in Ireland, the Caribbean and elsewhere.
What to do with it
Raw sea moss is the starting point rather than the finished product. Most people soak it and blend it into gel, then stir the gel into smoothies, juice or food. The full method is in the How to Use section on this page, and it is on the back of the bag.
The three colours
We sell raw Chondrus crispus in three: this red, plus purple and gold and gold. Same species, same preparation, different colour. All of them are on the raw sea moss page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between red, purple and gold sea moss?
Colour, and where it grew. All three are Chondrus crispus. The pigment varies with light exposure and water conditions. We stock all three and let people choose the one they prefer.
How much gel does a 4 oz bag make?
The method on the bag starts with 2 oz of raw moss and 2 cups of spring water, so a 4 oz bag runs two full batches.
Is this pool grown?
No. It is wildcrafted, harvested from natural sea beds by small harvesters. Pool grown sea moss is farmed on ropes in shallow tanks and is a different product.
How long does the gel keep?
Several weeks in the fridge in a sealed glass jar.
Where is it from?
This bag is from Canada. Across our raw range we source from Maine, Canada, Ireland, Northern France and Chile depending on the season, and the country of origin is printed on every bag.
How should I store it?
Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F. Dry raw sea moss keeps for a long time. Once you have made gel, that goes in the fridge.
