Description & Ingredients

A handmade lemongrass soap bar with wildcrafted Irish sea moss and sarsaparilla root, on a base of olive and coconut oils. 6 oz. Pure lemongrass and litsea cubeba essential oils give it the scent, sea moss gel gives it the slip. It cleanses, refreshes and leaves skin feeling soft, on the face and the body. Vegan, cruelty free, suitable for all skin types.

Real soap, not detergent, and why that matters

These are genuine handmade soaps, made the traditional way in small batches. Like all true soap, ours is made with sodium hydroxide, lye, which reacts fully with the oils during a curing process of several weeks and leaves no lye in the finished bar. That reaction is what soap is.

Most bars sold as soap in shops are not soap at all. They are synthetic detergent bars, which is why the label often says "beauty bar" or "cleansing bar" rather than soap. We list every ingredient, including the sodium hydroxide used in the process.

What is in it

  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Water
  • Sodium Hydroxide
  • Sea Moss Gel (Chondrus crispus)
  • Lemongrass Oil
  • Litsea Cubeba Fruit Oil
  • Sarsaparilla Root Powder

Eight ingredients. Pure essential oils, no synthetic fragrance, no dyes, no palm oil, no preservatives.

What it smells like

Bright, green and citrusy. Lemongrass leads, and litsea cubeba, sometimes called may chang, sits alongside it with a rounder lemon note that keeps it from going sharp. It is the freshest of our four bars and the one that reads most like a clean kitchen citrus rather than a perfume.

The scent comes from the essential oils themselves, not a fragrance blend, so it fades naturally over the life of the bar.

How to make a handmade bar last

Real soap has no hardeners in it, so it will soften if it sits in water. Keep it on a draining dish, out of the direct spray, and let it dry between uses. Treated that way a 6 oz bar lasts most people several weeks. Left sitting in a puddle it will not.

Frequently asked questions

Is there lye in the finished soap?
No. Sodium hydroxide is what turns oils into soap, and by the end of curing there is none left unreacted. Every true soap ever made has been made this way. We list it because it is part of the process.

What is litsea cubeba?
A small tree from East and Southeast Asia, also called may chang. Its fruit yields an essential oil with a soft lemon character, and it is used here alongside the lemongrass to round the citrus out rather than let it turn sharp.

Can I use it on my face?
Yes. It is made for the face as well as the body, on all skin types. Citrus oils can be brighter on sensitive skin than a floral bar would be, so if yours is sensitive it is worth trying it on a small area first.

Is it vegan?
Yes. No animal ingredients and no animal testing at any stage.

Does it contain palm oil?
No. The base is olive and coconut oil.

What do the sea moss and sarsaparilla do in the bar?
Sea moss gel is what gives the lather its slip and softness, which is the difference you can feel between this and a plain oil bar. Sarsaparilla root powder is milled into the blend and gives the bar its speckling.

What other scents do you make?
Four bars in total. This is the lemongrass one. There is also lavender, eucalyptus and spearmint, and calendula with orange and grapefruit. All are on the sea moss soaps page.

Made in small batches. For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes.
