Black seed oil is pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa, a flowering plant grown across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. Each teaspoon of ours carries 4,536 mg of black cumin seed oil, in a 2 fl oz amber glass bottle with a dropper.
One ingredient. Nothing added, no carrier oil, no blend.
Cold pressed, and why that is the thing to check
Ours is cold pressed, which means the seeds are crushed under pressure without heat or solvents. Much of the black seed oil sold is refined or steam distilled instead, because it is cheaper and yields more.
The difference is measurable. Published analysis of commercial Nigella sativa oils found thymoquinone, the compound the seed is known for, ranging from around 0.3 percent in refined oils up to around 3.0 percent in cold pressed single origin ones. Cold pressed and single origin is the end of that range you want, and it is the reason this bottle costs what it does.
Where it comes from
Egypt, single origin. Black seed has been grown and pressed there for a very long time; seeds were found in Tutankhamun's tomb. In Arabic it is habbat al-barakah, the seed of blessing. In India and Pakistan it is kalonji, and it is a kitchen spice as much as anything else, scattered on naan and folded into pickles. You may also see it called black caraway, black onion seed or nigella.
What it tastes like
Sharp, peppery and bitter, closer to oregano or mustard than to a neutral oil. It is not a pleasant oil to sip and nobody pretends otherwise. Most people take it with food, or chase it with water or honey. If the taste is the obstacle, a smaller amount stirred into something is easier than a larger one straight.
How to take it
The bottle has a glass dropper. Follow the directions on your bottle for the amount, and take it with food, especially the first few times.

Frequently asked questions
How much black seed oil should I take?
Follow the directions on your bottle. If it is your first time, start at the lower end with food and increase gradually. That is the guidance we stand behind rather than anything more.
Does it taste strong?
Yes. Peppery and bitter, and it is not an oil most people enjoy neat. Take it with food, or follow it with water or a little honey. If the taste is the obstacle, a smaller amount stirred into something is easier than a larger one straight.
Do I have to take it every day?
No. Plenty of people take it a few times a week rather than every day. Take it in whatever way you will actually keep up.
Is it cold pressed?
Yes, and it says so on the label. No heat, no solvents. This matters more with black seed than with most oils, because thymoquinone content varies a great deal between cold pressed and refined oils.
What is the difference between black seed oil and black cumin seed oil?
Nothing. Same plant, Nigella sativa. It is also sold as kalonji, black caraway, black onion seed and nigella oil. Note that it is not the same plant as the cumin you cook with, which is Cuminum cyminum.
Can I put it on my skin or hair?
People do, and it is a traditional use, but this bottle is labelled and sold as a dietary supplement to be taken by mouth. We are not able to give application instructions for something our label does not cover.
