Description & Ingredients

Lion's mane mushroom powder, 4 oz. Hericium erinaceus, grown and harvested in Canada, and known as melena de león in Spanish. Milled fine, one ingredient, nothing added.

How to use lion's mane powder

Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons into coffee, tea or a smoothie. For the herbal shot on the label, mix 1 to 2 teaspoons into 4 fl oz of hot water, stir well, cover and let it stand 3 to 5 minutes. It also goes into soups, stocks and savoury cooking, where the flavour actually suits the dish. Stir again before drinking, because a milled mushroom settles.

In coffee, and what we are not

Most of the lion's mane coffee sold is a ready made sachet with the mushroom already blended in. This is not that. This is the loose powder, so you stir it into whatever coffee you already drink and decide how much goes in. It costs less per cup than a branded sachet and you are not paying for the coffee twice. Add it to the grounds before brewing, or whisk it into the finished cup, since a fine powder can sit on top otherwise.

What it tastes like

Mild, earthy and savoury, much gentler than most people expect from a mushroom. It does not taste sweet and it does not disappear entirely, so it sits better in coffee, cacao and savoury food than in fruit juice.

Milled mushroom, not an extract

This is the whole mushroom dried and milled. It is not an extract, and it is not standardised to anything. Extracts are made by pulling selected compounds out with hot water or alcohol and concentrating them, which is a different product at a different price. Neither is better in the abstract. What matters is knowing which one you are buying, and shops are not always clear about it.

What lion's mane is

A white, shaggy mushroom, Hericium erinaceus, that grows in cascading spines off hardwood trees and looks more like a sea sponge than a toadstool. It has been eaten as food across East Asia for centuries and grows wild across North America, Europe and Asia. This bag is from Canada.

What is in the bag

Lion's mane mushroom powder and nothing else. One ingredient, no fillers, no flow agents, no sweetener, no coffee.

How to store it

Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag.

Frequently asked questions

How do you put lion's mane powder in coffee?
Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons into the finished cup and whisk or blend it, or add it to the grounds before you brew. A fine milled mushroom will float if you just drop it in and leave it. It suits coffee better than juice because the flavour is savoury rather than sweet.

Is this lion's mane coffee?
No, and that is worth being clear about. It is the loose mushroom powder, not a ready made coffee blend. You stir it into your own coffee, which costs less per cup and lets you set the amount.

What does lion's mane powder taste like?
Mild, earthy and savoury. Much gentler than people expect. It works in coffee, cacao, soups and savoury cooking, and less well in fruity drinks.

Is this an extract or just the mushroom?
Just the mushroom, dried and milled, one ingredient. It is not an extract and it is not standardised. If you want an extract, that is a different type of product and it will say so on the label.

Is it organic, and where does it come from?
It is organic or wildcrafted lion's mane mushroom powder from Canada, and the country of origin is printed on the bag.

What else do people buy with it?
The two other 4 oz powders that go into the same morning routine are maca root powder, which is nutty and malty, and moringa leaf powder, which is green and earthy. The full range is in loose leaf herbs and teas.

PRECAUTIONS

  • If you have a mushroom allergy, do not use it.
  • Not for use during pregnancy or nursing.
  • Not recommended for anyone under 18.
  • Individuals with known medical conditions should consult a physician before use.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

How to Use

DIRECTIONS:

Lion's mane powder is traditionally prepared as an herbal shot, or added to beverages and smoothies. To prepare as an herbal shot, add 1 to 2 teaspoons to 4 fl oz of hot water. Mix well. Cover and steep for 3 to 5 minutes, then enjoy. In coffee, stir 1 to 2 teaspoons into the finished cup and whisk it, or add it to the grounds before brewing. Stir again before drinking, because the powder settles.

Store tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C).
