Echinacea purpurea root, 4 oz. Echinacea purpurea, grown and harvested in Poland, and known as equinácea in Spanish. One ingredient, nothing added.
How to make echinacea tea
This one is simmered rather than steeped, because it is a root. Add 1 teaspoon to 8 fl oz of water, bring it to the boil, then cover and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from the heat, strain, and drink. A short steep in a mug will not get much out of a hard root, which is the usual reason a first cup tastes of nothing.
What it tastes like
Earthy and clean, with a definite bitterness and a faint tingle on the tongue that echinacea is known for. It takes lemon well. If you want it milder, simmer for 10 minutes rather than 15.
Root, not leaf or flower
This is the root only. Echinacea is also sold as the aerial parts, the leaf and flower, and as a tincture or a capsule, and they are not interchangeable in the pot. The root is the part that needs simmering.
Which echinacea this is
Echinacea purpurea, the purple coneflower. The other two you will see sold are Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea pallida. They are different plants with different roots, and shops do not always say which one is in the bag. Ours says it on the label and on this page.
What is in the bag
Echinacea purpurea root and nothing else. One ingredient, no fillers, no flavouring, nothing added.
How to store it
Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make echinacea tea?
Add 1 teaspoon of the root to 8 fl oz of water, bring it to the boil, cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes, then strain. It is simmered rather than steeped because it is a root. A fine mesh strainer catches the pieces on the way into the cup.
Is this the root or the leaf and flower?
The root only, and only Echinacea purpurea. The aerial parts are a different product with a different flavour and a different method. Nothing else is in the bag.
What is the difference between Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia?
They are two different species. Echinacea purpurea, the purple coneflower, is the one most widely grown and the one in this bag. Echinacea angustifolia is a narrower leaved plant with a different root. Many shops just print "echinacea" and leave you guessing. Ours is purpurea, printed on the bag.
Do you sell echinacea in tea bags?
No. This is loose root, so you set the strength yourself. If you want ready made bags instead, the teas and loose leaf herbs range has the bagged options.
Is it organic, and where does it come from?
It is organic or wildcrafted echinacea purpurea root from Poland, and the country of origin is printed on the bag.
What else goes well with it?
It is bitter and earthy, so it takes citrus and warming roots well. People commonly simmer it with ginger root, loose, or follow it with something gentler like chamomile flowers.
