Description & Ingredients

Dried calendula petals, 4 oz. Calendula officinalis, also called marigold, grown and harvested in Egypt. Whole dried petals, one ingredient, nothing added.

How to make calendula tea

Steep 1 tablespoon of the petals in 8 fl oz of boiling water. Cover and steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. The cup comes out a clear gold with a light, faintly peppery flavour. Keep it covered while it steeps.

What it tastes like

Mild and faintly peppery, more savoury than sweet, with none of the bitterness of a root. The colour is the striking part: a deep gold that carries into anything you add the petals to. It is naturally caffeine free.

What is in the bag

Whole dried calendula petals and nothing else. One ingredient, no fillers, no flavouring, nothing added. These are loose petals rather than whole flower heads, so they measure out by the spoon and scatter easily over food.

What calendula is

A flowering plant of the Mediterranean with vivid yellow and orange petals that open with the sun and close at dusk. It is in the daisy family, alongside chamomile and echinacea. The petals have been used in the kitchen and in body care for centuries, and they are one of the oldest natural food colourings in Europe.

Beyond the teapot

In the kitchen the petals go into salads, cakes and desserts, spice blends, baked goods, broths and rice dishes, where they add colour and a subtly peppery note. On the body care side they go into masks, body powders and infused oils. Whole petals hold their shape and colour better than a cut and sifted herb, which is why they are sold this way.

How to store it

Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make calendula tea?
Steep 1 tablespoon of dried calendula petals in 8 fl oz of boiling water, covered, for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. The cup comes out golden with a light, faintly peppery flavour. A fine mesh strainer catches the petals on the way into the cup.

Is calendula the same as marigold?
Yes and no, and it is worth knowing which. Calendula, Calendula officinalis, is often called pot marigold and it is the one used in food and body care. The bedding marigolds sold in garden centres are usually Tagetes, a different genus. This bag is Calendula officinalis, as printed on the label.

Can you eat calendula petals?
Yes. They go into salads, cakes, baked goods, spice blends, broths and rice, where they add colour and a subtly peppery note. They have been used as a food colouring for centuries.

What can I use dried calendula petals for besides tea?
Masks, body powders and infused oils on the body care side, and salads, baking and rice dishes in the kitchen. These are whole dried petals rather than a cut and sifted herb, so they hold their shape and colour.

Where can I buy dried calendula flowers?
Here. Orders leave in 1 to 2 business days, and we ship worldwide with duty pre paid for most countries. This is 4 oz of whole dried petals from Egypt, one ingredient. The rest of the range is in loose leaf herbs and teas.

Is it organic, and where does it come from?
It is organic or wildcrafted calendula from Egypt, and the country of origin is printed on the bag.

What goes well with calendula?
It is mild and golden rather than strongly flavoured, so it blends well instead of taking over. Chamomile flowers, loose is the natural partner, and the two are in the same plant family.
