Digestive Bitter tea bags contain six herbal ingredients that are all indicated for benefits to digestion.

Bitter herbs are traditionally used in herbal medicine to promote the appetite and to aid digestion. The taste of bitterness on the tongue will stimulate, via reflex circuits in the brain, the secretions and activity of the esophagus, the secretions of the stomach, duodenum and gall bladder and stimulate the production of insulin by the pancreas.

Digestion is the process of breaking down foods into nutrients that produce energy, growth and repair to the body. The gastro-intestinal tract is a series of hollow organs that are all connected to each other. The organs, in the order that they are connected, are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus.

Substances that enter the mouth interact with taste receptors which send signals to the brain that indicate whether the substance is sweet, salty, sour, bitter or savory (umami). Bitterness is traditionally connected with promoting appetite and aiding digestion. Interactions with the bitter taste receptors stimulate digestion via reflex circuits in the brain. Bitter herbs are traditionally connected with promoting appetite and aiding digestion.

Traditionally, bitter herbs in the form of an aperitif or tea, taken in a moderate amount 20 to 30 min before eating can stimulate gastric and biliary secretions, increasing the acidity of the gastric juice and aiding in digestion.
