Moringa leaf powder, Moringa oleifera, malunggay, for smoothies and tea

How to Use Moringa Powder: In Smoothies, as a Shot, and as Tea

By Suhail Rivera, JD, founder of Alkaline Herb Shop

The easiest way to use moringa leaf powder is to stir 1 teaspoon into a smoothie or juice. For a quick moringa drink, whisk 1 teaspoon into 8 ounces of hot water, cover for 2 to 3 minutes, and drink. Moringa is green and bold on its own, so most people blend it with fruit. This guide covers the smoothie, the shot, moringa tea, and how much to use.

How to use moringa powder in a smoothie

This is the most popular way. Add 1 teaspoon of moringa powder to any smoothie or juice and blend. Its green, earthy flavour sits best with fruit and citrus, which round off the strength. Start with a teaspoon and adjust to taste.

How to make a moringa shot or moringa tea

  1. Add 1 teaspoon of moringa powder to 8 ounces of hot water.
  2. Whisk or stir well, because the powder settles rather than dissolves.
  3. Cover and let it sit 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Stir again and drink. A squeeze of lemon suits it.

For a smaller, more concentrated shot, use the same teaspoon in just 4 ounces of hot water.

How much moringa should you use?

Start with 1 teaspoon a day and adjust to taste. A little is plenty, because the flavour is bold. Keep stirring as you drink so the powder does not settle at the bottom.

What does moringa taste like?

Green and earthy, somewhere between matcha and spinach. It is stronger on its own, which is why most people blend it into a smoothie or juice rather than drinking it plain.

Does moringa have caffeine?

No. Moringa is naturally caffeine free.

What is moringa, or malunggay?

Moringa is the dried, milled leaf of Moringa oleifera, the fast growing tree known as the drumstick tree, malunggay in the Philippines and sajna across South Asia. Ours is organic or wildcrafted moringa leaf powder from Colombia, one ingredient with nothing added. We make no health claims for it. Use it for its green, earthy flavour in a smoothie, a shot or the kitchen.

Who should not use moringa

  • Do not use it during pregnancy or while nursing.
  • It is not recommended for anyone under 18.
  • If you have a medical condition or take prescription medicine, speak to your doctor first.

How to store moringa powder

Keep it sealed and away from heat and light. Stored dry and closed, the powder keeps its colour and flavour for a couple of years.

Where to get it

Our moringa leaf powder is organic or wildcrafted from Colombia, finely milled, one ingredient with nothing added.
