How is Our Sea Moss Harvested?

How is Our Raw Sea Moss Harvested?

We use only wildcrafted Chondrus crispus, a sea moss species that grows naturally in cold North Atlantic waters, where it absorbs minerals from rocks and its marine environment. It is valued in traditional herbal practices and is known for its naturally occurring iodine, calcium, and magnesium content.*

We do not source sea moss from warm-water regions such as the Caribbean or Asia, where different sea moss species may be cultivated in shallow waters or on ropes. These species may differ in texture, appearance, and naturally occurring mineral content.

Our sea moss is harvested from the wild in its natural habitat to help ensure authenticity, integrity, and a rich mineral profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is raw Chondrus crispus sea moss, and how is it different from other seaweed?

Raw Chondrus crispus, commonly known as Irish sea moss, is a type of red algae that grows naturally along the rocky Atlantic coastlines of Europe and North America. It contains naturally occurring minerals such as iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron.

It is different from Caribbean sea moss, which is often cultivated in warm waters and suspended on ropes. Wild-harvested Chondrus crispus grows attached to rocks and draws nutrients directly from its natural ocean environment, which may lead to variations in composition.

Key Differences:
Nutrient Source: Wild Chondrus crispus is harvested from natural marine environments where it absorbs minerals from surrounding rocks and seawater.
Texture: It typically has a firm, slightly gelatinous texture when rehydrated. Caribbean varieties may have a different consistency depending on how they are grown and dried.

What are the most common uses of sea moss gel in food and beverages?

In Food:
Smoothies & Juices: Adds thickness and blends easily with fruits and vegetables.
Soups & Stews: Used as a natural thickening agent.
Baked Goods: Helps retain moisture in recipes like breads or muffins.
Plant-Based Desserts: Common in puddings and raw treats for texture.

In Beverages:
Herbal Teas: Can be stirred into warm beverages.
Nut Milks: Used to improve consistency and texture.

Can I consume sea moss every day?

Yes, sea moss can be consumed daily as a food ingredient. Many people add 1 to 2 tablespoons of sea moss gel to their meals or drinks each day. Always follow the usage instructions provided on the product label.

How do I prepare gel from raw sea moss?

1․ Rinse 2 oz of raw sea moss in spring water twice.

2․ Soak the rinsed 2 oz of sea moss in spring water for up to 24 hours.

3․ Remove sea moss from spring water, then rinse again.

4․ Using scissors, cut the sea moss into small pieces. (This prevents the blender from jamming.)

5․ Add 2 cups of spring water and the soaked sea moss to a blender. Blend together until it reaches a smooth consistency.

6․ Transfer to a glass jar and refrigerate. The sea moss gel stays good in the refrigerator for several weeks.

How long does sea moss gel last?

Refrigerated sea moss gel typically lasts up to 3 weeks. For longer storage, freeze in portions using an ice cube tray; frozen gel can last up to 6 months.

How can I identify high-quality raw sea moss?

Look for wild-harvested Chondrus crispus from cold-water regions. Quality sea moss generally has deep purple, red, or gold tones and a slightly coarse texture with traces of natural salt. Avoid sea moss that appears overly clean or pale, which may indicate artificial cultivation. Reputable brands often provide third-party testing for contaminants.

Are there any precautions to consider with raw sea moss?

• Sea moss contains iodine, and excessive intake may affect thyroid function.• Its fiber content may cause digestive changes in sensitive individuals.
• Rarely, allergic reactions may occur.
• Because sea moss may contain trace metals, source from brands that conduct third-party testing.

Consult a healthcare provider before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a medical condition.

Does raw sea moss expire?

Dried sea moss, when stored in a cool, dry place, can last up to a year. Gel should be refrigerated and used within a few weeks.

What does sea moss gel taste like?
