Dandelion root is the root of Taraxacum officinale, the same bright yellow flower that comes up through every lawn. Across Latin America it is diente de leon, lion's tooth, named for the jagged leaf. The whole plant is edible, and the root is the part people have dried and brewed the longest.
This is the loose format: 4 oz of cut and sifted root, organic or wildcrafted depending on the harvest, grown in Bulgaria. One ingredient. Nothing added, no fillers, no flow agents.
Where the bitterness comes from
Dandelion root tastes bitter because of a group of compounds called sesquiterpene lactones. They are the reason the cup has an edge to it, and they are why the root has been brewed as a bitter drink for as long as anyone has records of it. Toasting the pieces first softens that edge and pushes the flavour toward coffee.
Why loose root instead of tea bags
Two reasons, and they are the only two that matter. You set the strength. One tablespoon gives a lighter cup, two gives a deeper and more bitter one, and a longer simmer pulls more out either way. And it goes further per dollar. A 4 oz bag is a lot of root.
The trade is that you measure it, simmer it and strain it. If you would rather not, the dandelion root tea bags are the same root pre portioned at 2,000 mg with nothing to measure.
What it tastes like
Earthy and properly bitter, closer to coffee than to a fruit tea, with a roasted note if you toast it first. Many people drink it the way others drink coffee, in the morning or through the afternoon, and it is naturally caffeine free.
Quality and sourcing
Organic or wildcrafted depending on the harvest, grown in Bulgaria, cut and sifted rather than powdered. No fillers, no additives, no flow agents. Store tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make dandelion root tea?
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of root to 8 oz of boiling water and simmer for 15 minutes, then strain. Dandelion root is a root rather than a leaf, so it wants simmering rather than steeping. For a richer, coffee style cup, toast the pieces in a dry pan until fragrant before you simmer them. Full method in our dandelion root tea guide.
How much root should I use?
Our label says 1 to 2 tablespoons per cup. One is lighter, two is deeper and more bitter.
Does dandelion root have caffeine?
No. Dandelion root is naturally caffeine free and there is nothing else in the bag, so a cup brewed from it has no caffeine at all. That is why it is a common coffee alternative.
What does dandelion root taste like?
Earthy and bitter, in a coffee direction rather than a floral one. The bitterness is the character of the herb, not a fault, and toasting the root first rounds it out.
Loose root or the tea bags, which should I buy?
Loose root if you want to control the strength and get the most per dollar. Dandelion root tea bags if you would rather have it pre portioned at 2,000 mg with nothing to measure or strain.
Is this the root or the leaf?
The root. Dandelion leaf is a different part of the same plant with a different flavour and a different traditional use. This bag is root only.
