Description & Ingredients

Blood is our herbal iron formula: six organic or wildcrafted plants in a vegetable capsule, with iron that comes from the plants themselves rather than from an added inorganic salt. Each 6 capsule serving delivers 1.7 mg of iron, 10 percent of the daily value, which works out to 0.28 mg per capsule. Each tube holds 200 capsules, about a 33 day supply at 6 a day.

A good source of iron, which supports red blood cell formation and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue*

What is inside

Six plants, 300 mg of each per serving, 50 mg of each per capsule: nettle leaf (Urtica dioica), dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale), burdock root (Arctium lappa), blessed thistle whole plant (Cnicus benedictus), quassia branch (Quassia amara) and palo guaco stem (Mikania glomerata).

Nothing else but the vegetable cellulose capsule. No fillers, no additives, no flow agents, no iron salts added on top.

Why plant iron instead of an iron tablet

Most iron supplements use ferrous sulfate or a similar inorganic salt at a high dose, which is why they are known for being hard on the stomach. This is a different approach: a modest amount of iron occurring naturally in six whole plants, taken across the day rather than in one hit. It delivers 10 percent of the daily value, not 100. If you have been told you need a therapeutic dose of iron, this is not that product and your doctor's recommendation should win.

Quality and sourcing

Organic or wildcrafted depending on the harvest. Third party tested for identity, microbials and heavy metals. Produced in a GMP certified facility and made in the USA. Vegan capsules, vegetable cellulose, no gelatin.

Frequently asked questions

How much iron is in each serving?
1.7 mg per 6 capsule serving, which is 10 percent of the daily value and meets the FDA definition of a good source of iron. That works out to 0.28 mg per capsule. The full panel is on this page.

Is this the same as an iron tablet from the pharmacy?
No. Pharmacy iron tablets typically use ferrous sulfate at a much higher dose. This is a modest amount of iron occurring naturally within six whole plants. If you are managing a diagnosed deficiency, follow your doctor's guidance rather than swapping to this.

How long does a tube last?
About 33 days at the directed 6 capsules a day. There are roughly 33 servings in a 200 capsule tube.

What is palo guaco?
Mikania glomerata, a climbing plant from Brazil where it is a long standing part of the herbal tradition. It is one of the six plants in this blend. Please read the precaution below about it if you take a blood thinner.

Which of your products has the most iron?
Not this one. Our sea moss capsules carry 4 mg of iron per serving, 24 percent of the daily value, which makes them an excellent source and the highest in our range. Plant Power has 2.5 mg and shares nettle and dandelion with this formula, and our sea moss and bladderwrack capsules have 2 mg alongside iodine. If iron alone is what you are after, the sea moss capsules give you the most of it.

What is Blood Supplement (herbal iron)?
A vegan herbal iron supplement made from six whole herbs at 300 mg each per serving: dandelion root, nettle leaf, burdock root, blessed thistle, palo guaco stem, and quassia branch. Together they provide 1.7 mg of naturally occurring iron per serving (10% DV). Iron supports red blood cell formation and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue.*

Which herbs contain iron?
Dandelion root and nettle leaf are among the best known iron containing herbs, and both are in this blend, along with burdock root. The iron here is the plants' own; nothing is added or fortified.

How do I take it?
As a dietary supplement, take 3 capsules in the morning and 3 in the afternoon (a 6 capsule serving). The 200 count bottle is about 33 servings, roughly a one month supply. Follow the label, and ask a healthcare provider for advice fitted to you.

Is this a vegan iron supplement? Is it organic?
Fully vegan: whole herbs in a vegetable cellulose capsule, no fillers, additives, or mixing agents. Sourcing is organic or wildcrafted and varies by batch. Every batch is third party tested for identity, heavy metals, and microbials.

How long until I notice anything?
Everybody is different and we do not promise a timeline. Take it consistently as directed, and talk with your healthcare provider about what is right for your situation.

Can I take it with other medications?
If you take medication or have a health condition, check with your healthcare provider before adding this or any supplement, to make sure there are no interactions.

Where is it made?
In the USA, in a GMP certified facility, with every batch third party tested.

Can I buy any of these herbs on their own?
Five of the six are also sold separately: dandelion root (as a loose cut and sifted herb, and as dandelion root tea bags), nettle leaf (cut and sifted, for tea), burdock root (as capsules, and as a loose cut and sifted herb), palo guaco bark (for guaco tea), and quassia (as cut wood chips for tea). Blessed thistle is currently available only in our blends.

How to Use

As a dietary supplement, take 3 capsules in the morning and 3 capsules in the afternoon.

Splitting the serving is deliberate: it spreads the intake across the day rather than concentrating it. With or without food is your preference.

A 200 capsule tube runs about 33 days at that rate.

Precautions

This blend contains palo guaco (Mikania glomerata), which naturally contains coumarin. If you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, or any anticoagulant or regular NSAID, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

WARNING: Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately.

Our Blood Supplement (Herbal Iron) Is Third Party Tested

Our Blood Supplement (Herbal Iron) Is Third Party Tested

We conduct third-party lab tests for heavy metals, identity, and microbials to help ensure the quality and safety of our blood capsules (herbal iron). Because trace metals can be found in many natural ingredients, we test each batch twice, once upon raw material arrival and again after encapsulation through an independent third-party lab. This two-step process helps verify that our products meet internal quality and safety standards.

We believe in full transparency. Download our third-party test report below.

What's in Our Blood Supplement (Herbal Iron) Capsules: Six Herbs Per Serving

  • Burdock Root (Arctium lappa)
Each serving of our Blood Supplement capsules contains 300 mg of burdock root. Burdock is a biennial in the daisy family, native to Europe and Asia and now growing across North America. The root is eaten as a vegetable in Japan, where it is known as gobo and served in dishes such as kinpira gobo, and it is the burdock in the British soft drink dandelion and burdock. It contains inulin, a soluble plant fibre. The European Medicines Agency maintains a traditional-use monograph for burdock root, a registration that rests on documented history of use rather than on clinical trial evidence.

  • Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica)
Each serving contains 300 mg of nettle leaf. Stinging nettle grows across Europe, Asia and North America. Its sting comes from hollow hairs on the leaves and stems; drying or cooking destroys them, which is why nettle has been eaten as a spring vegetable and brewed as a tea for centuries. The plant was also historically retted for fibre and woven into cloth. Nettle leaf is a notable dietary source of vitamin K.

  • Blessed Thistle (Cnicus benedictus)
Each serving of our Blood Supplement capsules contains 300 mg of blessed thistle whole plant. Blessed thistle is an annual in the daisy family, native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East. It was widely cultivated in medieval European monastery gardens, which is where its common name comes from. Its characteristic bitterness comes from cnicin, a compound concentrated in the leaves and upper stems.

  • Quassia Branch (Quassia amara)
Each serving contains 300 mg of quassia branch. Quassia is a small flowering tree native to Central and South America. Its wood contains quassin, among the most bitter naturally occurring compounds identified, detectable by taste at extreme dilution. Quassia wood has long been used as a bittering agent in foods and beverages, and quassia cups turned from the wood were once used to flavour water.

  • Palo Guaco Stem (Mikania glomerata)
Each serving of our Blood Supplement capsules contains 300 mg of palo guaco stem. Palo guaco is a climbing vine in the daisy family, native to Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina, where it grows in Atlantic forest. It contains coumarin, which gives the dried plant a scent often compared to fresh hay or vanilla. It has a long history of traditional use in Brazil.

  • Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale)
Each serving contains 300 mg of dandelion root. Dandelion is a perennial in the daisy family found throughout the northern hemisphere. Its root contains inulin, a soluble fibre that accumulates through the growing season and peaks in autumn, which is when the root is traditionally harvested. Roasted dandelion root has been used as a coffee substitute, most widely during periods when coffee was scarce.
