Description & Ingredients

Our sea buckthorn oil is a Flavex supercritical CO2 extract of organic sea buckthorn berries (Hippophae rhamnoides), in a 1 FL OZ (30 mL) amber dropper bottle. CO2 extraction uses pressure rather than heat or solvents, and it is a 7 to 10 times concentrate. The only other ingredient is a trace of organic rosemary extract to keep it fresh.

Every batch is third party tested for identity, heavy metals, and microbials.

The science, in plain terms

Sea buckthorn berry oil is one of the few plant sources of palmitoleic acid (omega 7), a fatty acid that is naturally part of human skin and declines as we age. Ours runs 28 to 38% palmitoleic acid, concentrated in the berry rather than the seed.

In a clinical study, 60 women took sea buckthorn oil by mouth for three months, and their skin hydration and elasticity improved significantly.* That study is the basis for our support for healthy skin, and it is why we point to the 2 mL daily serving. Read the full research summary.

Where it comes from

Sea buckthorn berries have a history of use in China, the Himalayas and Russia as food, internally as traditional medicine and topically in cosmetics and skin care. The botanical name is Hippophae rhamnoides. The genus name comes from two Greek words, hippo, meaning horse, and phaos, meaning to shine: the leaves were used in ancient times as horse fodder, which gave the horses a shiny coat.

Ingredients

  • Organic Sea Buckthorn Berries
  • Organic Rosemary Extract

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy sea buckthorn oil?
Right here. We ship worldwide, with orders leaving in 1 to 2 business days.

How much do I take?
The dropper delivers 1 to 2 mL. For the skin benefit, the clinical work was done at the higher end of that range, so 2 mL a day is the serving to aim for. Take with or without food, or apply topically.

Is sea buckthorn alkaline?
Sea buckthorn is counted among the herbs in the alkaline eating tradition, which is why it sits in this shop. That is how the tradition classifies it, not a statement about your body.
