Dried mugwort, cut and sifted, 4 oz. Artemisia vulgaris, grown and harvested in Albania, and known as artemisa in Spanish. One ingredient, nothing added.
How to make mugwort tea
Add 1 teaspoon to 8 fl oz of boiling water. Cover and steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. Keep it covered, because the aromatic oils are the whole point and they leave with the steam. Start at 5 minutes. Mugwort gets noticeably more bitter the longer it sits.
What it tastes like
Earthy and sage like, with a clear bitterness behind it and an aroma closer to a herb from the kitchen than to a floral tea. If you like sage, rosemary or bay, it will make sense to you straight away. If you find it sharp, use half a teaspoon and steep for five minutes rather than ten.
It is a cooking herb too
This is the part most listings leave out. Mugwort has been a kitchen herb across Europe and East Asia for centuries, used the way you would use sage or bay, and in Korea and Japan it is worked into rice cakes and dumplings for its colour and flavour. Ours is cut and sifted, so it goes straight into a stock, a bean pot or a dough without further chopping.
What is in the bag
Cut and sifted mugwort and nothing else. One ingredient, no fillers, no flavouring, nothing added.
What mugwort is
A tall roadside plant with dark green, deeply cut leaves that are silver and downy underneath, which is the easiest way to recognise it. It is in the daisy family, alongside wormwood, burdock and echinacea, and it grows on verges, waste ground and river banks across Europe, Asia and North America. This bag is from Albania.
How to store it
Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make mugwort tea?
Add 1 teaspoon of the cut and sifted herb to 8 fl oz of boiling water, cover, and steep 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. Keep the cup covered while it steeps. Use half a teaspoon and the shorter time if you find it too bitter. A fine mesh strainer handles the small pieces.
What does mugwort tea taste like?
Earthy and sage like, with a real bitterness behind it. It is a savoury, herbal cup rather than a soft or floral one. It gets more bitter the longer it steeps, so five minutes is a fair place to start.
Where can I buy dried mugwort?
Here. Orders leave in 1 to 2 business days, and we ship worldwide with duty pre paid for most countries. It is 4 oz of cut and sifted mugwort, one ingredient, and it sits with the rest of the range in loose leaf herbs and teas.
Can you cook with mugwort?
Yes, and it is one of the oldest uses for it. Treat it like sage or bay: a pinch in a stock, a bean dish or a roast, or worked into dough. Because ours is cut and sifted it is ready to use straight from the bag.
Is it organic, and where does it come from?
It is organic or wildcrafted mugwort from Albania, and the country of origin is printed on the bag.
What else goes with it?
It is bitter and savoury, so it sits well next to other bitter herbs rather than sweet ones. People who drink mugwort often also keep yellow dock root, loose or burdock root, loose in the cupboard.
PRECAUTIONS
- Do not use during pregnancy. This is not the general caution. Mugwort acts on the uterus and is specifically avoided in pregnancy. Also avoid while nursing.
- Mugwort is in the daisy family (Asteraceae), alongside ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold and echinacea. If you are allergic to any of those, do not use it. Mugwort pollen allergy is also linked to reactions to celery, carrot and some spices, so take care if that applies to you.
- Mugwort contains thujone, as wormwood does. Use it short term rather than continuously.
- Not recommended for anyone under 18.
- Individuals with known medical conditions should consult a physician before use.
- Keep out of reach of children.
