Description & Ingredients

Hydrangea root powder, 4 oz. Hydrangea arborescens, grown and harvested in the USA, and known as raíz de hortensia in Spanish. One ingredient, milled fine, nothing added.

How to use it, and why the powder is different

Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons into 4 fl oz of boiling water, mix well, cover and let it stand 2 to 3 minutes, then drink. That is the whole method. There is no strainer and nothing to throw away, because the root has already been milled. Stir it again before drinking, since powder settles. A hard root like this one would otherwise need a fifteen to twenty minute simmer, which is what you do with a bark or a cut root. Milling it is what removes that step.

What it tastes like

Earthy and woody with a dry, slightly bitter finish, the way most milled roots taste. It is taken as a small shot rather than sipped as a mug, which is what the label directions describe.

What is in the bag

Hydrangea root powder and nothing else. One ingredient, no fillers, no additives and no flow agents.

What hydrangea root is, and what it is not

This is the root of Hydrangea arborescens, the wild North American smooth hydrangea, which grows through the eastern United States. It is not the ornamental hydrangea from a garden centre and it is not made from garden hydrangea flowers. Only the root is used, and this bag is grown and harvested in the USA.

Other ways it is used

Beyond the herbal shot, hydrangea root powder is traditionally made into a tincture or a salve. Both are on the label, and the powder form is what makes them straightforward.

How to store it

Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make hydrangea root tea?
Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons of the powder into 4 fl oz of boiling water, mix well, cover, and let it stand 2 to 3 minutes. Because it is a powder there is nothing to strain and no simmering, which is what a whole root would need. Stir again before drinking.

Is this the same as the hydrangea in my garden?
No. This is the root of Hydrangea arborescens, the wild smooth hydrangea of the eastern United States, and only the root is used. Ornamental garden hydrangeas are different plants grown for their flowers, and they are not what is in this bag.

What does hydrangea root taste like?
Earthy and woody with a dry, slightly bitter finish. It is taken as a small shot rather than sipped by the mug.

Is this powder or cut root?
Powder, milled fine. A whole or cut root has to be simmered for fifteen to twenty minutes to get anything out of it. Milled, it goes straight into hot water. If you would rather simmer a cut root, the loose leaf herbs and teas range has several.

Where can I buy hydrangea root?
Here. Orders leave in 1 to 2 business days, and we ship worldwide with duty pre paid for most countries. This is 4 oz of milled root, one ingredient, from the USA.

Is it organic, and where does it come from?
It is organic or wildcrafted hydrangea root from the USA, and the country of origin is printed on the bag.
