Description & Ingredients

Black walnut hulls, cut and dried, 4 oz. Juglans nigra, grown and harvested in the USA, and known as nogal negro in Spanish. One ingredient, nothing added.

How to make black walnut hull tea, and why it is simmered

Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to 8 fl oz of water, bring it to a gentle simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, then remove from heat, strain and drink. Simmered, not steeped. A hull is hard and woody, and a few minutes in a mug will not open it up.

What a hull actually is

The outer husk that surrounds the shell of the nut, not the shell and not the kernel. On the tree it is a thick green casing; once the nut is harvested the husk is removed, and that husk is what is in this bag, cut into pieces and dried. These are dried hulls, not green hulls. Dried, they are hard, dark brown to almost black, and curled, which is exactly what the photograph on this page shows.

What it tastes like

Deep, woody and astringent, with a dry finish that lingers. It is not a soft cup and most people drink it small.

What is in the bag

Cut and dried black walnut hulls and nothing else. One ingredient, no fillers, no flavouring, nothing added.

Other ways it is used

Beyond the tea, black walnut hull is traditionally prepared as a tincture. That is on the label.

How to store it

Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make black walnut hull tea?
Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to 8 fl oz of water, bring it to a gentle simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, then remove from heat, strain and drink. Simmered, not steeped. A hull is hard and woody and a few minutes in a mug will not open it up.

What is a black walnut hull?
The outer husk that surrounds the shell of the nut, not the shell and not the kernel. On the tree it is a thick green casing; once the nut is harvested the husk is removed, and that husk is what is in this bag, cut into pieces.

What is the difference between green hulls and dried hulls?
Green hull means the fresh unripe husk, taken while it is still soft and green on the tree. Dried hull is the same part after it has been cut and dried for storage. This bag is dried, not green. The photograph on this page shows exactly what you get: hard, dark, curled pieces.

Does it contain tree nuts?
Yes. Black walnut hull is the husk of a tree nut. Do not use it if you have a tree nut allergy.

Where can I buy black walnut hulls?
Here. Orders leave in 1 to 2 business days, and we ship worldwide with duty pre paid for most countries. This is 4 oz of cut and dried hulls from the USA, one ingredient. The black walnut leaves are the other part of the same tree we sell.

Is it organic, and where does it come from?
They are organic or wildcrafted black walnut hulls from the USA, and the country of origin is printed on the bag.

How to Use

DIRECTIONS:

Black walnut hull is traditionally prepared as a tea or tincture. To prepare as a tea, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of black walnut hull to 8 fl oz of water. Bring to a gentle simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat, strain, then enjoy. It is simmered rather than steeped, because a hull is hard and woody.

Contains tree nuts. Do not use if you have a tree nut allergy.

Store tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C).
