Description & Ingredients

These are whole dried hibiscus flowers, the deep red petals of Hibiscus sabdariffa. In Spanish the flower is called flor de jamaica, and if you have ever had agua de jamaica, the ruby colored agua fresca sold all over Mexico, this is the flower it is made from.

The flavor is tart and fruity, close to cranberry, and the color carries into anything you brew. Hot hibiscus tea, iced tea, agua fresca: same flower, three drinks.

Each bag holds 4 oz of organic or wildcrafted dried hibiscus flowers from Egypt. Just the petals, nothing added.

Whole petals, not cut
These are whole dried calyces, the deep red part that surrounds the seed pod, left intact rather than cut or powdered. Whole petals mean you control the strength, and they strain out cleanly instead of clouding the cup.

How to store them
Tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), as printed on the bag.

Frequently asked questions

Does hibiscus tea have caffeine?
No. Hibiscus is naturally caffeine free, so a cup has no caffeine at all, morning or night.

What is agua de jamaica?
It is the Spanish name for hibiscus flowers and for the ruby colored iced drink made from them, sold all over Mexico. Same flower, brewed strong, sweetened and chilled. For the full method, see our hibiscus tea and agua de jamaica guide.

How do you make hibiscus tea?
Add 1 teaspoon of dried hibiscus flowers to 8 fl oz of boiling water. Cover and steep 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. Enjoy hot, or brew it stronger and pour over ice.

What does hibiscus tea taste like?
Tart and fruity, close to cranberry, with a deep red color that carries into the cup.

What is hibiscus tea, and what is in it?
It is tea brewed from the dried petals of Hibiscus sabdariffa, called flor de jamaica in Spanish. This bag is one ingredient: organic or wildcrafted dried hibiscus flowers from Egypt, nothing added.

Is hibiscus tea alkaline or acidic?
The tea itself is acidic, and that is exactly where the tartness comes from. Anyone telling you a hibiscus brew is alkaline in the cup is describing a different drink. What the alkaline food tradition sorts by is not the pH of the drink but what a food is held to leave behind after it is digested, which is why hibiscus turns up on those lists while still tasting sharp. We are not going to tell you it changes your body's pH, because that is not something we can say.

Where can I buy dried hibiscus flowers?
Here. This is 4 oz of organic or wildcrafted whole dried hibiscus flowers from Egypt, one ingredient. Orders leave in 1 to 2 business days, and we ship worldwide with duty pre paid for most countries. The rest of the range is in loose leaf herbs and teas.
